Statement from the Otipemisiwak Métis Government on the Election of the Prime Minister

Posted on: Apr 29, 2025

The Otipemisiwak Métis Government extends its sincere congratulations to Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Liberal Party of Canada on their election victory. Our government looks forward to working collaboratively with Prime Minister Carney and his Cabinet in the years ahead.

The Government of Canada has previously affirmed its commitment to working with the Otipemisiwak Métis Government to advance Métis self-determination and self-government. Our 2019 legally binding Self-Government Agreement forms the foundation for a brighter future for Métis Citizens, rooted in our inherent rights and those recognized under Section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982.

As the Prime Minister and the new government establish post-election priorities and form a Cabinet, the Otipemisiwak Métis Government respectfully calls for action on the following priorities:

  1. Advance the full implementation of our Self-Government Agreement, including federal legislation that recognizes the Otipemisiwak Constitution and our law-making authority.
  2. Work with us toward a modern-day treaty with the Métis Nation within Alberta, grounded in recognition, respect, and a true nation-to-nation relationship.
  3. Ensure that the voices and rights of Métis Citizens are respected and upheld in all federal policies, legislation, and funding decisions that impact our Nation.

“Our governments have made meaningful progress in recent years,” said President Andrea Sandmaier. “We are ready to continue to work in partnership with the Prime Minister and his government to achieve lasting progress for our Nation. Together, we can build a future that honours our government-to-government relationship with Canada and empowers future generations of Métis Citizens.”
