President's Corner - May 2, 2025

Posted on: May 02, 2025

As many of you know, Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Liberal Party of Canada won the recent federal election. Shortly after the results came in, I wrote to Prime Minister Carney on behalf of our government to reaffirm our commitment to working together in a respectful, nation-to-nation relationship.

In that letter, we outlined our top priorities for the Otipemisiwak Métis Government: full implementation of our Self-Government Agreement, continued progress toward a modern-day treaty and ensure that the voices and rights of Métis Citizens are respected and upheld.

These priorities will continue to guide us, no matter who holds office in Ottawa or Edmonton.

Within our Nation, there are a range of political views and that’s something we respect. Our Citizens are diverse, thoughtful, and politically engaged. Regardless of who is in power, whether federally or provincially, our job as your Métis Government is to work with all levels of government and all parties to advance the priorities of our Nation, to ensure your voices are heard and your rights are respected.

Self-government, health, education, housing, and economic development aren’t partisan issues, they’re Métis priorities. And advancing them takes a willingness to collaborate with all governments.

We made significant strides working with the federal government and we will continue to work collaboratively with Prime Minister Carney and his Cabinet in the years ahead.

This month, we’re also marking two important national days of reflection and action. On May 5, we honour Red Dress Day, remembering the lives of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQIA+ people. Later in May, the Moose Hide Campaign calls on all of us, especially men and boys, to take a stand against gender-based violence. These days are a reminder that the work of building safer, stronger communities starts with each of us.

Thank you for continuing to stand with our government. It’s your voices, your experiences, and your support that shape our path forward.
