Notice of Special Assembly

Metis Nation of Alberta Notice of Special Meeting. This notice is to inform the citizens of the Métis Nation of Alberta that a Special Meeting of the Métis Nation of Alberta will be held to address the resolution below: That the Metis Nation of Alberta election of 2022 be postponed (1) year to September 2023. Saturday, June 4, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. The Bowes at Bonnetts En ergy Centre, 10017-99 Avenue, Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 0R7. Copies of the full Special Resolution can be found at albertametis.com or by contacting the Provincial Office in Edmonton. Whereas the Métis Nation within Alberta (MNA) has the inherent right to self-determination and self-government;

Whereas the Métis Nation of Alberta Association was incorporated out of necessity to receive funding and deliver programs and services, but is not and has never been a true or full reflection of our Métis tradition of self-government;

Whereas after generations of organizing, advocacy, and negotiations, in June 2019, the Métis Nation of Alberta and Canada signed the Métis Government Recognition and Self-Government Agreement, which recognizes our right to self-government and establishes the process by which the Métis Nation of Alberta will be recognized as a government in federal legislation;

Whereas the Métis Nation of Alberta Constitution Commission has been engaging with Citizens from across the province to develop a constitution to serve as the foundation of our self-government that will be presented at the Annual General Assembly in August with a view to having it ratified in a province-wide vote this fall;

And whereas within a year we expect to hold elections for our Métis government as established by our constitution;

Whereas Article 3 of the election bylaws allows for a special meeting to change the date of the election,

Therefore, in accordance with the MNA Bylaws, Article 26, at a duly called meeting of the Provincial Council of the Métis Nation of Alberta on May 15, 2022, where at least seventy-five (75%) percent of the Provincial Council members were present, and seventy-five (75%) percent of the Provincial Council members voted in favor of a resolution to hold a Special Meeting. the motion reads as follows:

Duane Zaraska moved to call a Special Assembly as soon as possible to deal with postponing the election of 2022 for 1 year: Seconded by Hilda Lambert. Motion Carried Unanimously

This notice is to inform the citizens of the Métis Nation of Alberta that a Special meeting of the Métis Nation of Alberta will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, June 4, 2022 at The Bowes at Bonnetts Energy Centre, 10017-99 Avenue, Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 0R7 to address the resolution below:

That the Métis Nation of Alberta election of 2022 be postponed one (1) year to September 2023.
