Gathering Information
It is the responsibility of the applicant to provide their genealogy details back to the mid-1800s with complete names, birth dates, and places of birth of the Métis ancestry they are verifying. Applicants may also reference a current family member who is a recognized Citizen of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.
However, we may be able to assist potential applicants who require help completing their family tree to the mid-1800s.
Gather all relevant family background information and contact our Genealogy department. We off in-person family tree assistance at the Provincial Office in Edmonton, every Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., on a walk-in basis. no appointments are needed.
If you are unable to visit us in person, call the office at 780-455-2200 or 1-877-454-0684 and ask for the Genealogy department.
If you are already of Citizen of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government, you are entitled to a copy of the original family tree included in your application. You can email your request to registry@metis.org
