Migratory Bird Survey

Project Highlights (2019-2020):

With funding support from the Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS), we completed migratory bird harvesting surveys for the 2019 and 2020 harvesting seasons to collect data from Métis harvesters in Alberta. This information was shared with CWS to inform migratory bird conservation; however, the MNA has expanded the survey to look at other topics such as upland game bird harvests and unique names Métis harvesters use for bird species.

  • 332 Citizens participated in the survey for the 2019 harvest season, reporting 1,369 bird harvests.
  • 390 Citizens participated in the survey for the 2020 harvest season, reporting 3,829 bird harvests.
  • Harvests were reported in 90 Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) across Alberta.
  • 39 unique Métis names migratory birds and game birds were recorded.
