Quality of Care for Métis in Alberta Emergency Departments

Co-Creating Understandings and Definitions Project

The emergency department (ED) is a critical source of health care for Métis people in Alberta. Racism in health care has been identified as a contributing factor in the health disparities experienced by Indigenous Peoples in Canada, including Métis people.¹ This initiative seeks to set the foundation for systemic changes in the healthcare system and improve ED experiences for Métis people in Alberta through a rigorous investigation of racism and experiences of care

About This Project

This project is a partnership between the University of Alberta and the Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s Department of Health. Our project’s three objectives are to:

Measure differences in ED visits and quality between Métis and non-Métis persons in Alberta.
Explore Métis ED experiences of seeking and receiving care in the ED.
Produce Métis definitions of quality of care in the ED.
