You may qualify for our Benevolence Fund if you have an immediate family member who has recently passed away and you are responsible for paying for funeral costs.

Eligibility

  • The applicant or the deceased must be a Citizen of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government / Métis Nation of Alberta.
  • The applicant must be an immediate family member of the deceased or identified as next of kin on the death certificate.
    • Immediate family members include: spouse, parent, grandparent, child, grandchild, or sibling.
    • At this time, in-law relations are not eligible for this fund.
  • Must provide proof of relation if the deceased does not have an Otipemisiwak Métis Government / Métis Nation of Alberta citizenship card (i.e. long-form birth certificate, court documents, adoption records, baptismal, genealogy).
  • The applicant must be the person(s) responsible for paying the funeral costs and have expressed financial hardships in paying for: funeral services, the burial, or the feast at the funeral.
    • This fund will not support any other associated costs for the funeral, including travel costs.
    • Payment requests from “the estate” of the deceased will not be honoured.
    • Payment requests to the funeral home will not be processed.
  • If the deceased lived out of province, the applicant must confirm in the application that they did not claim benevolence funding or benefits from other Métis Nation governing members.
    • If other funds were received, applicants will not be eligible for this fund.
  • All eligible applications must be received no later than four months from the deceased’s passing.
  • Applicants must be a current resident of Alberta.
  • Only ONE application per deceased family member will be approved.

Required Supporting Documentation

  • A copy of the applicant’s or deceased’s Otipemisiwak Métis Government/Métis Nation of Alberta citizenship.
  • A copy of the Death Certificate.

Please note: Applications may take six weeks to process from when all documents are received. If approved, the benefit will be mailed to the name and address on the application form. We are unable to check the status of cheque processing within 30 days of approval.
