BECOME A WATER GUARDIAN AND HELP PROTECT OUR LAKES!

Passionate about the water quality in your local lake? Apply to our Water Guardians Program to help protect it for future generations and the species who call it home!

Learn more and apply for the program today.

Applications close on March 31, 2026.

Successful applicants will travel to a lake in central Alberta in May 2026 with the Environment and Climate Change team and learn how to sample a lake for water quality testing over two days.

After training concludes, program participants will take samples from their local lakes monthly between June 2026 and September 2026.

The Environment and Climate Change Department will provide water guardians with free first aid training, pay for their boat license, and issue an honorarium to water guardians who complete their training and water sampling work.

Preference will be given to candidates who have access to a boat. Have a family member or friend who is also passionate about protecting our lakes? Encourage them to apply! Water guardians will work in pairs to sample their local lake, so we’ll also give preference to Citizen applicants who live in the same household or close to each other.
