Askîy Initiative

Askîy, meaning earth or land in Cree, is an environmental-monitoring initiative using methods that braid both Métis Traditional Knowledge with western science. Through this initiative, our team engages with citizens, hears their climate and environment related concerns, and in turn designs and implements projects to monitor or address the concerns. A series of monitoring projects have been launched since March 2020, primarily focused on monitoring plants, fish, and wildlife across Alberta.

Our Work:

The initiative is guided by the Askîy Advisory Committee comprised of six community members (one for each MNA Region), one Métis Elder, and one Métis Youth. Meetings are held quarterly to share progress, gather feedback, and obtain guidance for future work.
