Tribute to Métis Elder Angie Mercredi-Crerar

Posted on: Jan 14, 2026

We honour the life and legacy of Métis Elder Angie Mercredi-Crerar, whose passing is felt deeply across the Métis Nation, in Grande Prairie, and well beyond. Angie was a matriarch, a survivor, and a leader whose life was defined by service, courage, and an unwavering commitment to her people.

Born in 1936 in Fort Resolution, Northwest Territories, Angie experienced significant hardship early in life. After losing her mother at a young age, she endured the residential school system. Rather than allowing those experiences to silence her, Angie carried them forward with purpose. She became a voice for truth, healing, and dignity, ensuring that Métis stories and lived experiences were acknowledged and respected.

Angie made Grande Prairie her home in 1966 and spent more than five decades serving the community she loved. As the long-time President of Métis Local 1990, she was a steady and trusted leader, known for bringing people together and grounding her work in culture, compassion, and lived experience. She worked closely with friendship centres, community organizations, and Métis families, always focused on strengthening identity, pride, and connection across generations.

One of Angie’s most enduring contributions was her role in creating the Elders Caring Shelter in Grande Prairie. The shelter reflected who she was at her core: a place rooted in respect, safety, and care, built on the belief that Elders deserve dignity and support.

Angie was also entrusted with representing Métis people on the national and international stage. She was one of the Métis representatives present for Pope Francis’ apology for the harms of residential schools. That moment carried deep meaning, as Angie stood there not only as a leader, but as a survivor and an Elder, representing her our Nation with strength, honesty, and grace.

Her decades of service were recognized through numerous honours, including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal and, most recently, the King’s Coronation Medal in 2025. These recognitions acknowledged a lifetime of volunteerism, leadership, and advocacy. Yet Angie was never defined by awards. She will be remembered for her warmth, her humour, her wisdom, and the way she made people feel seen and supported.

“Angie was a cherished friend, a guiding matriarch, a respected leader, and so much more to our Nation. Wherever she went, she carried kindness, love, and an unwavering pride in the Métis Nation and our culture. Her strength, wisdom, and leadership helped shape and strengthen our community, and they had a lasting impact on me personally. I am profoundly grateful for the guidance she offered, the knowledge she shared, and the example she set through her humility and unwavering care for others. I will also always cherish the laughter we shared and the warmth she brought into my life. She will be deeply missed, and I will forever be grateful for the mentorship, grace, and compassion she so generously shared with those around her.”

—Andrea Sandmaier, President of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government

Angie’s legacy also lives on through her family and through the stories she ensured were preserved, including those shared in My Mother’s Legacy, written by her daughter. Through story, action, and example, Angie helped ensure that Métis history, resilience, and strength would continue to be shared with future generations.

Angie Crerar was a matriarch in the truest sense. Her life leaves behind a stronger Métis Nation and a reminder of what it means to lead with heart. Her spirit, humour and commitment will be remembered with deep respect and gratitude.
