Statement from President Sandmaier on Alberta Separation
Posted on: May 06, 2025
The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is increasingly concerned by the growing rhetoric that Alberta is considering separating from Canada. The Métis Nation existed in our Homeland long before the creation of the province of Alberta by the federal Government and even prior to Canadian Confederation.
Discourse from those who support Alberta separation blatantly disregards the inherent rights of First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples and ignores the Crown’s obligations to Aboriginal Title holders and commitments in Treaties to First Nations. This is not only harmful but also completely erases the legal and constitutional foundations of Canada and the vital role that Indigenous Peoples have played in shaping this country.
We understand that many Albertans may feel frustrated or ignored by Canada. As Métis, our story has been long shaped by resilience in the face of government neglect and a persistent lack of recognition. However, separation is not a solution grounded in reality; it is merely divisive political theatre. Our Métis government strongly opposes any efforts aimed at moving forward with a referendum on secession.
Our government acknowledges Premier Danielle Smith’s commitment that the Government of Alberta will not pursue a government-led referendum on separation. However, we encourage the Crown’s representatives in Alberta to actively promote unity and uphold Canada and Alberta’s obligations to all Indigenous Peoples.
We urge all levels of government to work together to advance a strong, united country. One that recognizes and honours the inherent rights of Indigenous Peoples, and one that seeks unity, not division.
We’re all in this together.
Andrea Sandmaier, President, Otipemisiwak Métis Government
