Calgary, AB – The Otipemisiwak Métis Government and the City of Calgary have taken a meaningful step toward expanding affordable housing for Métis and Indigenous families in Calgary. Through Calgary’s Maa’too’maa’taapii Aoko’iyii’piaya program, Métis Capital Housing Corporation (MCHC), an Institution of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government, will receive $2.34 million to support the purchase of land for a new affordable housing development in the city. The goal is to build at least 45 new affordable homes for Indigenous families.
“A home is not only a roof over your head, but also the foundation for life,” said President Andrea Sandmaier. “Having access to safe, secure, and affordable housing is something everyone needs. I want to thank the City of Calgary for working with our government so we can deliver solutions that meet the housing needs of our Citizens.”
All the units will be 20 per cent below the Median Market Rent for the life of the project.
“62 Métis families are on the waiting list for affordable housing in Calgary,” says Provincial Secretary of Housing and Seniors, Valerie Quintal. “Creating partnerships with municipal governments will go a long way toward ensuring the housing needs of our Citizens are met and that they will have a safe and secure place to call home.”
