Edmonton, AB – Citizens have concluded voting in the 2025 Spring District By-Elections.
By-elections were called following the resignations of the Citizens’ Representatives in Rocky View Métis District and Wabasca-Desmarais Métis District, and the District Captain in Wabasca-Desmarais Métis District.
The by-election in Wabasca-Desmarais Métis District was held from April 5-7 for in-person voting and until April 13 for mail-in ballots.
The by-election in Rocky View Métis District was held from April 6-13, which included mail-in, online, and in-person voting.
Under the Otipemisiwak Métis Government Constitution, the five Territories of the Métis Nation within Alberta are subdivided into Districts to allow for more effective and localized representation. One Citizens’ Representative is elected per District to sit on the Citizens’ Council, which advances the collective rights of the Métis within Alberta, Treaty negotiations and claims to Métis scrip, and enacts laws.
Each District Council, led by a District Captain, is accountable to the Citizens within their District and has the authority to oversee Crown consultations, environmental monitoring, and land claims and repatriation within the District.
