Statement from the Otipemisiwak Métis Government for Pride Month
Posted on: Jun 09, 2025
June is Pride Month, a time to celebrate 2SLGBTQIA+ people, reflect on the ongoing struggle for equity, and recommit to building inclusive, welcoming communities for all. The Otipemisiwak Métis Government stands with 2SLGBTQIA+ Métis Citizens this month and every month. You are loved. You are valued. And you have always been part of our people’s story.
Métis culture is rooted in kinship, connection, and respect for diversity. Across generations, Two-Spirit people have held important roles in our communities as knowledge keepers, healers, artists, and leaders. While colonization tried to erase these roles, we are working to reclaim them and ensure that every Citizen feels safe, seen, and supported within their government.
Through programs like Protecting and Increasing Cultural Safety for Métis Women, Youth, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ (PICS), we have been engaging 2SLGBTQIA+ Citizens across the province to better understand their lived experiences and ensure they are meaningfully represented and protected by the Otipemisiwak Métis Government. These conversations help us shape how we show up for each other and ensure that our government is inclusive, responsive, and protective of all Citizens.
Pride Month may be one moment on the calendar, but 2SLGBTQIA+ Métis Citizens don’t just exist in June. You are part of our communities, our families, and our Nation every day of the year. Our support, recognition, and commitment to your wellbeing must reflect that 365 days a year.
To our 2SLGBTQIA+ Citizens, we see you and we are proud to walk beside you.
