President's Statement: Otipemisiwak Métis Government Welcomes Strengthened Federal Engagement

Posted on: Dec 11, 2025

The Otipemisiwak Métis Government was pleased to participate in the Métis National Council’s Annual General Assembly in Ottawa this past week.

Throughout our time in Ottawa, we saw a meaningful level of engagement from federal partners who took the time to listen, learn, and speak directly with our government. We extend our thanks to the Honourable Mandy Gull-Masty, Minister of Indigenous Services Canada; the Honourable Rebecca Alty, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations; the Honourable Rebecca Chartrand, Minister of Northern and Arctic Affairs; and the Honourable Jill McKnight, Minister of Veterans Affairs. We also thank the Members of Parliament, including Jamie Schmale, and Lori Idlout for joining us at the Métis National Council’s gala.

Our delegation also had the opportunity to engage with Senators during a breakfast hosted by Senator Mary Coyle, and Senator Patti LaBoucane-Benson. These conversations reinforced the importance of strong relationships across both Houses of Parliament as we advance the priorities of Métis people here in Alberta.

“The high level of engagement we saw from our federal partners last week was extremely encouraging. I want to thank the Ministers, Members of Parliament, Senators, and federal officials for joining the Métis Nation in partnership last week. I would especially like to thank Ministers Rebecca Atly and Mandy Gull-Masty for spending the entire evening of the gala with our delegation celebrating Métis culture,” said Andrea Sandmaier, President of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.

The Otipemisiwak Métis Government recognizes that there is still much work to do. But heading into 2026, we are encouraged by the strengthened relationships and open dialogue demonstrated in Ottawa. We look forward to continuing this government-to-government work and advancing the priorities and rights of the Métis Nation within Alberta.
