President's Corner - October 18, 2024
Posted on: Oct 18, 2024
As October is already over half way over and we move closer to November, I want to remind you that Métis Week is approaching quickly. A time of year to reflect on our proud heritage, honour the legacy of Louis Riel, and recognize the vital contributions Métis people have made to our country. I want to encourage all of you to join us for the Louis Riel Commemorative Event at the Alberta Legislature on November 16 at 10:30 a.m. It’s a significant moment for our community to come together and commemorate a leader who stood up for the rights of his people and laid the groundwork for the future we are building today.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the privilege to connect with many of you at events that reflect our shared commitment to advancing the opportunities for Métis Citizens. Recently, I was at Shaakipakowa: Celebrating Our Métis Student and Alumni Community in Calgary, hosted by the Rupertsland Institute. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of supporting our youth through education and ensuring that they have the tools to succeed.
At Olds College, we marked a historic step forward with the establishment of a new Métis Education Endowment. This is about more than financial support, it’s about making sure that Métis students have the opportunity to pursue their dreams and contribute to their communities. And it’s moments like these that make me proud of the progress we’ve made as a Nation.
I’ve also had the chance to engage with Métis business leaders during a workshop designed specifically for Alberta MétisWorks-registered businesses. This session was aimed at helping businesses navigate federal procurement processes, providing them with the tools they need to compete and succeed. The strength and potential of our business community continues to impress me, and it’s critical that we support them as they grow.
I look forward to seeing many of you during Métis Week, please keep an eye on your inboxes and on our social media accounts for information about events happening in your areas. And I hope, if you are able, that you’ll join me in commemorating Louis Riel Day as we reflect on our history and look to the future with confidence and determination.
