This week marked a historic moment for the Otipemisiwak Métis Government as we welcomed four new District Captains into their roles during a swearing-in ceremony. On behalf of our entire government, I extend heartfelt congratulations to Guy L’Heureux (Foothills Métis District 1), Terry Rudyk (Jasper House Métis District 7), Joseph René de Meulles (Fort Edmonton Métis District 9), and Chantel Sparklingeyes (Lac La Biche Métis District 19). Each of these individuals brings a profound commitment to serving our Citizens and advancing the values of our government.
These new District Captains are stepping into their roles at a time when our government continues to grow and evolve, guided by the principles of self-government and Métis identity. Their leadership will be instrumental in ensuring that the voices of our Citizens are heard, and their needs are addressed.
Their election is also a testament to the progress we have made together over the past year. From the adoption of our new Constitution to the expansion of critical initiatives in housing, education, and health, we are laying the foundation for a strong and sustainable future.
This week also saw another significant step forward for our government with the renewal of the Declaration of Relationship with EPCOR. This renewed agreement reaffirms our shared commitment to fostering Métis economic opportunities and advancing the goals of self-determination. Through this partnership, we are unlocking new pathways for collaboration in areas such as environmental stewardship, infrastructure, and community development. It is a clear demonstration of what we can achieve when we work together with respect and shared purpose.
As we reflect on these milestones, I am reminded that building a government is both an honour and a responsibility. It requires courage, collaboration, and a commitment to the well-being of our people. Our newly sworn-in District Captains will play a central role in this work. As advocates, bridge-builders, and stewards of our Métis government, they will ensure that we remain connected to the grassroots and true to our Citizens’ aspirations.
