President's Corner - November 16, 2024

Posted on: Nov 15, 2024

This past week, we gathered to celebrate Métis Week, a time to honour our history, culture, and contributions to the fabric of Canada. It has been a week filled with joy, reflection, and pride as we celebrated across the province and remembered the legacy of one of our greatest leaders, Louis Riel.

Today, as we mark the anniversary of Louis Riel’s wrongful execution, we reflect on the life of a man whose vision continues to inspire us. Riel was a leader, a visionary, and a champion for justice. He believed in a Canada where all communities had a voice, a belief that shaped his fight for Métis rights, self-determination, and recognition.

Throughout this week, we have come together for events that showcased the beauty of Métis culture and the strength of our people. From traditional music and dance to educational workshops and heartfelt ceremonies, these gatherings remind us of the spirit of our Nation.

As we remember Louis Riel’s sacrifice, we also celebrate the progress we have made as the Otipemisiwak Métis Government. Our journey to self-government, the reclamation of our rightful place in Canada’s story, and the preservation of our traditions are the continuation of Riel’s dream.

But there is still work to do. Riel’s pursuit of justice calls on us to keep striving for recognition, for reconciliation, and for a future where Métis voices are heard and Métis rights are upheld.

As we close this week of celebration, I encourage all of us to carry Riel’s legacy forward. I am so hopeful for the future we are building together as a Nation.
