President's Corner - May 30, 2025
Posted on: May 30, 2025
Over the past two weeks, I’ve been in Ottawa meeting politicians and senior officials to make sure the new government knows exactly who we are and what our priorities are as a Métis government.
It was an honour to attend the Speech from the Throne in the House of Commons, alongside other Indigenous leaders from across the country. These moments are important not just for the ceremony and speeches, but because they offer the chance for our Métis government to be recognized. In doing so, we are sending a message to say we’re here, we’re organized, and we’re ready to do the work.
In every meeting, I made it clear that the Otipemisiwak Métis Government is focused on our Citizens. That means advancing the full implementation of our Self-Government Agreement. It means pushing for federal funding and legislation that recognizes and respects our Constitution. And it means making sure Métis voices are heard in every policy conversation, from housing and education to mental health and economic development.
We don’t go to Ottawa to be seen. We go to be heard. We did that this month, and we will continue to have a strong presence at the table.
As much as I value those conversations in the capital, I’m even more excited to be back in community. This is where our strength really lives. It lives with our families, our Elders, our youth, and the Citizens who show up day in and day out to build something better for the next generation.
And what better way to come together and continue to build something than Alberta Métis Fest?
If you’ve been before, you know what a special celebration it is. If you haven’t, this is your year. The fiddle music, the jigging, the laughter of kids running around, the smell of bannock in the air: Alberta Métis Fest is a reminder of who we are, where we come from, and the joy that’s at the heart of our Nation.
I hope to see you at Métis Crossing on June 13 and 14. Bring your family, bring your friends, and let’s celebrate everything it means to be Métis, together.
