President's Corner - June 28, 2025

As Indigenous History Month comes to a close, I want to take a moment to reflect on the stories, strength, and resilience of our people and remind us all that this isn’t something we honour just one month a year.
Indigenous history is Canadian history. It’s Métis history. And for far too long, this truth was left out of classrooms, out of conversations, and out of the story this country told about itself. But we change that when we speak our truth, live our culture, and stand proud in who we are.
This journey hasn’t been easy. From displacement and discrimination to the legacy of residential and day schools, Métis families have endured generations of hardship. But we’ve also held onto our values. We’ve built strong communities, preserved our language and spirituality, and our culture. We have always governed ourselves as Métis people. And today, our government is legally recognized—and we are building the government our ancestors dreamed of and fought for.
This week, we look ahead to Canada Day. Canada Day can be a complicated time for many Indigenous Peoples. But it can also be a moment of pride.
We can have pride in the fact that Métis are the lifeblood of this country. We are bridge builders between cultures, founders of communities, and fierce defenders of our rights. We’ve been here for hundreds of years. And we always will be.
So, as we move into July and the rest of the summer, I encourage you to keep celebrating our history. Not just in June, but every month of the year. Support a local Métis community event. Share your story. Teach your kids where they come from. Keep living our values because our story is still being written and every one of us is part of it.
