President's Corner: January 9, 2026

I want to wish you and your family a year filled with good-health, connection, and pride in who we are as Métis people.
A new year always brings a sense of possibility, to leave the negative behind, and embrace the hope, and positivity of the year ahead. And this time around, it feels especially important.
There is so much good to come for our Nation, and so much to look forward to as we continue building our government together.
One of our main goals this year may seem simple, but the truth is that it holds so much meaning in embracing who we are, and having others embrace the Métis. And that is to tell more Métis stories and history.
During Métis Week, we were reminded of just how deeply our stories matter. Not just the big moments in history that cross the pages of Canadians history textbooks, but the everyday stories passed down in kitchens, at community halls, on traplines, and around family tables. Stories of resilience, humour, hard work, and community. Stories that show who we are, where we come from, and how Métis people built this province. They are also the stories of historic Métis communities and families who built lives, economies, and governance systems across Alberta and the Métis Homeland, often in the face of exclusion and erasure.
Our stories are nation-building. They span generations. They connect families. They ground our work in lived experience. And they push back against the idea that Métis identity is something from the past, rather than something living, breathing, and growing all around us.
In 2026, you’ll see us sharing more of these stories. From Elders and youth, harvesters and entrepreneurs, families in urban centres and rural communities, and Citizens who are quietly doing incredible things every day. This includes uplifting the histories of long-standing Métis communities and family lines whose stories have too often been overlooked or misunderstood. This is about making sure Métis voices are heard in our own words, on our own terms.
Of course, in this we will also continue to share our history, where we come from, and the stories of our ancestors who fought for our rights.
I want to invite you to be part of this Métis pride and share your stories about your family, community, culture, or your journey as a Métis Citizen.
Your story matters, and it deserves to be told.
Marsii, and I’m looking forward to seeing where this new year takes as us a government and as a Nation.
