Presidents Corner - February 7

Posted on: Feb 07, 2025

Over the past few weeks, we’ve taken important steps forward as a government—steps that will have a lasting impact for our citizens, our families, and our future.

One of the most critical discussions we’ve had was at the Reclaiming Our Children, Transforming Our Path: A Gathering for Change, where we continued the conversation on how we build a stronger future for Métis children and families in the context of Bill C-92. For too long, decisions about our children were made by systems that did not understand who we are or what we need. Bill C-92 changes that. It affirms what we have always known: we have the right to care for our own children. Now, the real work is in making sure that right is fully realized. That means continuing to put Métis culture at the heart of our child and family services—so that no Métis child grows up without their community, their identity, or their history.

Housing is another challenge where real action is needed. That’s why the opening of Cecil Bellrose Manor is such an important milestone. This project will provide 127 Indigenous families with access to safe, affordable housing—something that Cecil Bellrose spent his life fighting for. But we know this is just the beginning. The waitlists for housing programs are too long, and too many Métis families are struggling to find a home they can afford. Our government will continue working with our partners at all levels to push for more investment, more support, and more opportunities for our citizens to build a better future.

Finally, we welcomed our newly elected District Captains and Councillors for an onboarding session—leaders who will be at the frontlines supporting our citizens at the district level. Their energy, commitment, and dedication to service will be key as we continue to build a government that is responsive, effective, and focused on our citizens.

The work ahead won’t always be easy. The challenges we face as Métis people are real. But our strength, our determination, and our commitment to self-government are stronger. We will keep pushing forward—because that is what our citizens expect, and that is what we will deliver.
