President's Corner - December 13, 2024
Posted on: Dec 13, 2024
As we approach the end of another year, I want to provide you with an update on the progression of self-governments recognition with the government of Canada.
Earlier this week, Canada’s Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister, Gary Anandasangaree stated in a parliamentary committee that Bill C-53, which aimed to support Métis self-government in Alberta, Ontario, and Saskatchewan, is unlikely to “continue in its current form.”
After he made these comments, I had the opportunity to meet with Minister Anandasangaree to discuss this and the vital work of strengthening our Government-to-Government relationship with Canada.
During this meeting, the Minister confirmed that Canada remains committed to continuing to work with our government on the next steps to advance our visions of self-determination and self-government. Together, we focused on ensuring that Canada upholds the commitments made to the Métis Nation within Alberta through our legally binding Self-Government Agreements.
This is not just about agreements on paper—it’s about securing a stronger, brighter future for our citizens, grounded in our rights and self-government. Our discussions centred on collaboration and mutual respect, and I am confident we are making meaningful progress toward advancing the priorities of our government.
As we reflect on the successes and challenges of this past year, I want to thank each of you for your contributions to building a thriving Otipemisiwak Métis Government. From the tireless efforts of community leaders to the unwavering commitment of our citizens, it is your dedication that moves our government forward.
The holiday season is also a time for family, community, and celebration. I wish each of you a joyful Christmas filled with love and warmth. May the New Year bring renewed hope, good health, and continued progress for us all.
Together, we will continue to build a future that honours our past and fulfills the promise of our self-government.
Andrea Sandmaier
President, Otipemisiwak Métis Government
