Presidents Corner: December 12, 2025

As we head into the final weeks of the year, I can’t help but reflect on the momentum we felt in Ottawa at the Métis National Council’s Annual General Assembly. This year’s AGA was a clear affirmation that the Otipemisiwak Métis Government is being heard at the national level, and that our Citizens’ priorities are firmly on the federal agenda.
Over the course of the week, we engaged directly with several federal cabinet ministers, leaders in Indigenous Services, Crown-Indigenous Relations, Northern Affairs, and Veterans Affairs, as well as Members of Parliament who took the time to sit with us, listen, and learn. Their presence and participation mattered. It signaled respect for our Nation, recognition of our work, and a shared commitment to moving forward in true partnership.
We also had meaningful conversations with Senators at a breakfast hosted alongside the Métis National Council. These discussions really reinforced the importance of the Senate’s role in advancing reconciliation, strengthening distinctions-based policy, and ensuring legislation reflects the realities and rights of Indigenous peoples.
Throughout the AGA, one message guided our conversations:
Our Citizens have the answers, but we need our federal partners to walk with us.
I was encouraged to see that message understood and taken seriously. Our government continues to show up with solutions, clear priorities, and a commitment to collaboration. Whether we are talking about economic development, consultation, major projects, or the path to our modern Treaty, we are working to build a stronger, more secure future for Métis families in Alberta.
Back in Alberta, this past week was just as busy with our final Cabinet and Citizens’ Council meeting of 2025, as well as community events in both Edmonton and Hinton.
As we move into the holiday season, I want to extend my gratitude to each of you. This year has been full of meaningful progress from strengthening our self-government, to building new programs and services, to restoring our role as protectors of our lands and rights. None of this happens without you.
This season is a time for rest, reflection, and gathering with loved ones. I hope you find warmth, connection, and peace in the weeks ahead.
From my family to yours, Merry Christmas, happy holidays, and marsii for all you do to strengthen our government.
