President's Corner: March 6, 2026

Posted on: Mar 06, 2026

It’s been a busy few weeks for our Métis Government, filled with opportunities to connect and strengthen our community.

Last week, I had the honour of attending our annual Youth and Seniors Gathering.

This year’s Youth & Seniors Gathering marked an important milestone. We celebrated 10 years of bringing Métis Youth and Seniors from across Alberta together to strengthen our connection, build deeper community ties and pass on shared knowledge.

What began as a small afternoon gathering has grown into a vibrant, full-weekend event welcoming more than 400 Youth and Seniors. Over the past decade, this Gathering has become a powerful bridge between generations.

The Youth and Seniors Gathering strengthens our Métis identity by reminding our youth that they belong to something strong and enduring, and by honouring our seniors and the knowledge they hold.

The 2026 Gathering was guided by the theme Anisko, a Michif and Cree word meaning connection. Rooted in kinship and shared experience, participants reflected on how we connect with one another, across generations, and what it means to connect to our Métis culture.

This year’s keynote address, Aniskohocikan – String of Beads, was delivered by Métis scholar and Otipemisiwak Métis Government Citizen, Chelsea Vowel. She reflected on the Métis understanding of time as circular, where generations are intricately connected and knowledge flows between past, present, and future.

Throughout the weekend, Youth and Seniors came together in meaningful ways, strengthening pride in Métis identity values and traditions. The gathering also provided an opportunity to honour the late Métis Elder Angie Crerar, who recently passed, in recognition of her immense contributions to the Youth and Seniors Gatherings and to our Nation as a whole.

I’d also like to share that our government will soon be hosting the Alberta Métis Works Business Mixer & Summit. If your business is registered with Alberta Métis Works, join us in Calgary on March 11 at the Grey Eagle Resort and Casino, in Slave Lake on March 21 at the Legacy Centre, or in Edmonton on March 23 at the Double Tree Hilton West Edmonton.

Join us as we bring businesses together through tradeshows, networking opportunities, and workshops combined with Métis Culture. For details on the Metis Works Business Mixer and Summit events, visit albertametis.com/amw-summit-events.
