EDMONTON, AB – President Andrea Sandmaier of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government is travelling to Ottawa this week with a delegation of Provincial Secretaries and senior leaders to participate in a historic summit with the Prime Minister of Canada and other Métis leaders.
The meeting marks a significant opportunity to advance priorities related to infrastructure, economic development, self-government, and federal-provincial collaboration. President Sandmaier will be representing the voices of 73,000 Métis Citizens across Alberta, and reaffirming the Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s commitment to working across all levels of government to deliver results.
“Our Citizens have given us a clear mandate: to show up, to lead, and to build a better future for the next generation,” said President Sandmaier. “We are here to be part of the solution, to help move projects forward, to grow our economy, and to make sure Métis voices are at the table from the very beginning and throughout the entire process.”
The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is the oldest and largest Métis government in Canada. With a constitution ratified by its Citizens and a modern self-government agreement in place, the government is focused on delivering programs and services that reflect the needs and aspirations of Métis in Alberta.
During the summit, President Sandmaier will speak to the role Métis Citizens and businesses can play in supporting national projects, address the importance of meaningful consultation at both the federal and provincial levels, and call for stronger mechanisms for intergovernmental collaboration.
“Our people have always been builders, whether that be of bridges, of commerce, or of community,” said Sandmaier. “We’re proud to continue that legacy today, and we look forward to strengthening our relationship with Canada as true partners in progress.”
