Otipemisiwak Métis Government Statement on New Indigenous Court in St. Paul
Posted on: Jun 24, 2024
The Otipemisiwak Métis Government welcomes the establishment of the Healing to Wellness Court in St. Paul, as announced by the Government of Alberta. This milestone is a significant step towards a culturally relevant and responsive justice system for Indigenous Peoples, including Métis in Alberta.
The Canadian justice system has seen an overrepresentation and systemic discrimination of Indigenous Peoples, including the Métis. That is why our government is developing an Alberta Métis Justice Strategy, which will provide us with a clear path forward to respond to the experiences and needs of Métis Albertans in all aspects of the justice system.
We extend our thanks to Justice Minister Mickey Amery and the Alberta government for their work to make this project a reality, and we look forward to the positive impact this initiative will have on the St. Paul community and beyond.
