Otipemisiwak Métis Government Congratulates Mark Carney on Liberal Leadership Victory

Posted on: Mar 10, 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Edmonton, AB (March 10, 2025) — The Otipemisiwak Métis Government extends its congratulations to the Prime Minister-Designate, Mark Carney, on his decisive victory in the Liberal Party of Canada leadership race.

“The Métis Nation has been on the path toward self-government for over 200 years, and we have made significant progress in recent years,” said Otipemisiwak Métis Government President Andrea Sandmaier. “We look forward to working with Prime Minister-Designate Carney to build upon these achievements and advance our shared priorities, including the negotiation of a modern-day treaty that reflects our rights, aspirations, and contributions to Canada.”

Before Carney’s leadership, important steps were taken to recognize and affirm Métis rights, moving the Métis Nation closer to self-determination and reconciliation. The Otipemisiwak Métis Government remains committed to continuing this work in partnership with the Government of Canada.

We also recognize the importance of strong economic policies in the face of the ongoing trade dispute. The tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump pose significant threats to Canadian businesses, including Métis entrepreneurs, who are key drivers of innovation and economic growth. It is critical that Canada’s response includes Métis voices and prioritizes local businesses. The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is committed to supporting  the federal government’s efforts and strengthening Métis entrepreneurship through initiatives like Alberta MétisWorks, our online directory connecting Métis-owned businesses with procurement opportunities.

As the new Liberal leader prepares to assume office as Prime Minister, the Otipemisiwak Métis Government is eager to collaborate in the spirit of mutual respect and reconciliation, ensuring lasting and meaningful progress for our citizens.
