Edmonton, AB – January 17, 2025 – The Otipemisiwak Métis Government of the Métis Nation within Alberta is excited to announce the “Reclaiming Our Children, Transforming Our Path: A Gathering for Change,” a significant event focused on redefining child and family services for Métis in Alberta. Act C92 provides Indigenous communities with the jurisdiction to design and deliver care systems that reflect their unique cultural and social realities. For the Otipemisiwak Métis Government, it has opened the door to creating meaningful change in an area that has historically fallen short for Métis families.
Over the past year, the Otipemisiwak Métis Government has worked hand-in-hand with Métis Citizens to co-develop a care model that truly reflects the needs, priorities, and aspirations of Métis children and families. The Reclaiming Our Children, Transforming Our Path event will build upon this foundation, bringing Métis voices to the forefront once again to ensure that the model meets the holistic needs of the community.
“We aim to ensure that Métis families are not only supported but also given opportunities to strengthen their communities and their family ties in meaningful, healthy ways,” said President Sandmaier. “This gathering is a critical step in continuing that journey toward transformation.”
This gathering is more than an event—it is a reminder of the power of community. It brings Métis people together from all corners of the province to identify the specific supports needed to help Métis families thrive. The event serves as a celebration of resilience and the incredible work of building community within a community.
“This is a major step in the right direction,” said Brooke Bramfield, Secretary of Child and Family Services. “Through C-92, our government has a unique opportunity to shape a system of care that reflects the values, traditions, and needs of Métis families.”
Participants will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of discussions and workshops aimed at strengthening connections, empowering families, and ensuring that Métis children grow up in environments that nurture their cultural identity and overall well-being.
