Otipemisiwak Métis Government and EPCOR Renew Declaration of Relationship to Advance Métis Economic Opportunities and Self-Determination.

Posted on: Nov 22, 2024

Smoky Lake, Alberta – The Otipemisiwak Métis Government and EPCOR proudly signed a renewed Declaration of Relationship, marking a significant step in advancing shared goals for economic growth, employment opportunities, and mutual respect.
The signing reaffirms both parties’ dedication to creating meaningful opportunities for Métis citizens, ensuring equitable access to jobs, and fostering an environment of collaboration and respect.

“We are keeping the spirit of our ancestors alive with this renewed agreement,” said Andrea Sandmaier, President of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government. “This is about relationships formed to advance economic dreams and self-determination, not just promises but tangible results.”

The new agreement underscores the importance of respect, transparency, and mutual learning. It reflects a shared vision of expanding Métis access to stable and purposeful employment, a critical component in driving economic self-sufficiency for Métis communities.

“Reconciliation is not just a concept, it’s something we live every day. This partnership is about results—real opportunities that will make a difference for Métis citizens and contribute to a stronger, more inclusive Alberta,” adds President Sandmaier.

As part of the agreement, EPCOR has committed to increasing awareness and understanding of Métis culture within the company, ensuring that Métis heritage is respected and acknowledged at every level. This commitment to cultural education and mutual respect is vital in fostering an inclusive workplace that values Indigenous identity and governance.

The partnership also supports the Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s ongoing efforts to assert its rights to self-determination and self-government, aligning with its new governance structure. This relationship ensures that Métis citizens will have a voice in shaping their future.

As the agreement is signed, both the Otipemisiwak Métis Government and EPCOR are looking forward to a future rooted in shared values, a future that empowers Métis citizens, strengthens communities, and contributes to the growth and prosperity of all Albertans.
