Métis Crossing Welcomes 29 Plains Bison Yearlings, Strengthening Commitment to Cultural and Ecological Restoration

Posted on: May 12, 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 12, 2025

Smoky Lake, AB — The Otipemisiwak Métis Government and Métis Crossing are proud to announce the recent arrival of 29 pure plains bison yearlings from Elk Island National Park. This significant addition to the herd marks a vital step in the governments mission to support conservation, preserve Métis culture, and rebuild the historical relationship between the Métis Nation and the buffalo.

The young plains bison, which arrived in February 2025, will join an already thriving herd at Métis Crossing that includes 20 pure wood bison, alongside a commercial herd of 150 cows and 10 bulls. In keeping with conservation best practices, the wood and plains bison will be kept separate to maintain the genetic integrity of each species.

“This is more than just conservation, it’s reconnection,” said Andrea Sandmaier, President of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government. “The return of the buffalo to Métis lands is symbolic of healing and cultural renewal. We’re not just rebuilding a herd—we’re restoring a vital part of our history, identity, and future.”

The newly arrived yearlings will be carefully acclimated before settling into the area that will be included in the Visions, Hopes and Dreams at Métis Crossing Wildlife Tour, where they will play a key role in educational and cultural programming.

“This effort is rooted in both tradition and vision,” added Grant Lacombe, Secretary of Harvesting and Culture. “It’s about respecting the past while investing in the future—creating opportunities for ecological regeneration, cultural education, and sustainable development for generations to come.”

“This is another great reason- and there are many – to visit Métis Crossing,” explains Métis Crossing CEO, Juanita Marois. “Anyone who participates in the Visions, Hopes and Dreams at Métis Crossing Wildlife Tour will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to safely see heritage species in their historic habitat.”

“I also want to highlight the great relationship we have with Parks Canada – specifically Elk Island National Park,” said Sandmaier in closing. “They have been a great partner when it comes to bringing the bison back to our cultural grounds.”
