City of Edmonton and Otipemisiwak Métis Government celebrate Métis Week 2025

Posted on: Nov 19, 2025

Today, the City of Edmonton, in partnership with the Otipemisiwak Métis Government,
recognized Métis Week 2025 with a proclamation and cultural celebration at City Hall.
“Métis Week reminds us that the spirit of the Métis Nation continues to grow through
language, art and leadership that enrich our city every day,” said Mayor Andrew Knack. “As a
new Council, we are proud to walk beside the Otipemisiwak Métis Government as a partner
in reconciliation and as a city that honours the voices, knowledge and leadership of Métis
people.”

“The Otipemisiwak Métis Government values the strong government-to-government
partnership with the City of Edmonton,” said Andrea Sandmaier, President of the
Otipemisiwak Métis Government. “Métis Citizens have always been builders of this city, from
its earliest days to today. Through this partnership, we are creating new opportunities for
our Citizens and ensuring our voices and perspectives are reflected in the decisions that
shape Edmonton’s future. Métis Week is a celebration of our history, our self-determination
and our continued role as a proud and distinct Métis Nation within Alberta.”

Métis Week honours the life and legacy of Louis Riel, who was executed on November 16,
1885, and celebrates the culture, achievements and enduring strength of Métis people,
whose communities remain an essential part of Edmonton today. Each year, Edmontonians
are invited to reflect on the Métis Nation’s pursuit of self-determination and the lasting
influence of Métis Citizens in shaping our city.

This year’s celebration follows the 2024 signing of the renewed Memorandum of Shared
Recognition and Cooperation between the City of Edmonton and the Otipemisiwak Métis
Government. The agreement reaffirms an active government-to-government relationship
grounded in respect, accountability and collaboration. Together, both governments continue
to advance shared priorities in areas such as housing, consultation, economic development
and cultural respect.
