Citizen Update: Progress on Establishing the Council of Elders and Knowledge Keepers
Posted on: Feb 27, 2025
The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is making important progress towards establishing the Council of Elders and Knowledge Keepers, which is mandated by our Constitution and further outlined in the Self-Government Act. We have heard from our citizens how crucial this is, to the point that it is enshrined in our laws and constitution.
On February 27 and 28, 2025 a workshop with the Citizens’ Council will be held in Edmonton. We acknowledge that this has been a long journey, but the workshop represents an important milestone in a process that must be approached with care and respect. Everything we have as Métis today is due to the wisdom and sacrifices of the generations before us. This workshop will provide an opportunity to discuss respectful and thoughtful pathways forward.
Guidance from our Elders and Knowledge Keepers is a vital part of our self-government, and we are eager for our Elders and Knowledge Keepers to continue to play an essential role in shaping our governance.
