Alberta MétisWorks Business Mixer & Summit Connected and Inspired Entrepreneurs

Edmonton, AB — The Alberta MétisWorks Business Mixer & Summit took place on March 28 and 29 at the Coast Nisku Inn and Conference Centre. This event, organized by the Otipemisiwak Métis Government, served as a powerful platform for over 370 registered Métis entrepreneurs, business leaders, and community members to connect, collaborate, and grow.

Featured sessions included presentations from Angie Saltman of Saltmedia, focusing on empowering Métis entrepreneurs through digital media. Attendees also engaged in dynamic panel discussions on financing, business development, and breaking barriers in leadership.

A variety of workshops, panel discussions, and keynote presentations explored economic empowerment, Indigenous entrepreneurship, Métis women in business, and youth leadership.

“The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well today for our Citizens. The Alberta MétisWorks Business Mixer & Summit was an incredible opportunity for our Citizens to connect, learn, and grow together,” said President Andrea Sandmaier. “By supporting Métis entrepreneurs and fostering strong business networks, we are building a brighter economic future for our community.”

The entrepreneurial spirit of the Métis people stretches back centuries, rooted in the very beginnings of the fur trade. Our ancestors—who were the guides, interpreters, clerks, canoe men, fur packers, and trade negotiators—played an indispensable role in the development of the northwest economy.

The Métis were also expert hunters and innovators, developing the cart systems that made it possible to transport goods and furs across vast distances, contributing to the expansion of the fur trade. These contributions were not just pivotal to the fur trade economy but laid the groundwork for the larger economic development of the west.

“As Métis, when we strengthen their economic position, we take control of our future, building a foundation where Métis people can succeed on their terms. This is what self-determination looks like. The Alberta MétisWorks Summit plays an important role in this journey, supporting Métis entrepreneurs as they lead the way to a prosperous future,” concluded President Sandmaier.
