Do you have concerns about gender-based violence in Alberta? Join us at one of the Justice Department’s engagement sessions to share your experiences, insights, and ideas for change.
The Otipemisiwak Métis Government plays a pivotal role in representing Métis people across Alberta, championing their socio-economic and cultural interests while promoting self-reliance and self-determination. Although recent years have seen increased national attention on GBV affecting Indigenous women, there remains a pressing need to acknowledge and address the violence experienced by Métis men and boys. When such trauma is overlooked, its consequences ripple across families and communities—impacting not only men and boys but also women, children, and 2S+ people.
Breaking the Silence responds to this need by offering Métis-led, trauma-informed spaces for men and boys. These spaces enable sharing, resilience-building, and collective problem-solving, aligning with the National Action Plan to End GBV, specifically its pillars of supporting victims, survivors, and families, and preventing violence.
These gatherings create space for open dialogue, shared healing, and cultural connection around:
- The impacts of gender-based violence
- The loss of Indigenous men and boys
- The deep roots of intergenerational trauma
Breaking the Silence is a province-wide initiative that brings together the following Métis Albertans aged 18+:
- Métis men
- Survivors of gender-based violence
- Families of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Men and Boys (MMIMB)
- Gender-diverse individuals (2S+)
