Otipemisiwak Métis Government Acknowledges Historic MOU signed between Northwest Territories Métis Nation and Métis National Council

Edmonton, AB – The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is celebrating the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding between the Northwest Territories Métis Nation and the Métis National Council, marking an important step toward strengthening collaboration and unity across the Métis Homeland.
The agreement establishes a framework for collaboration and ongoing dialogue between the Métis National Council and the Northwest Territories Métis Nation to advance shared priorities, strengthen Métis governance, and ensure that the perspectives of Métis in the Northwest Territories are reflected in national advocacy and policy discussions.
“The border between Alberta and the Northwest Territories is a line drawn by others, but our relationships are much older and much stronger than that line,” said President Andrea Sandmaier. “Our ancestors built these connections through kinship, shared work on the land, and a commitment to community. I want to thank the Métis National Council and the delegation from Northwest Territories Métis Nation, led by President Garry Bailey, for their leadership and for to travelling to Edmonton for this important day. This agreement reflects what our Elders have always taught us, Métis communities are stronger when we work together.”
Following the signing, President Andrea Sandmaier and Secretary of Citizenship and Registry Joe Chodzicki participated in a Leadership Roundtable to discuss shared priorities and identify opportunities for collaboration. As a governing member of the Métis National Council, the Otipemisiwak Métis Government looks forward to working with the Northwest Territories Métis Nation to advance initiatives in areas such as economic development, health, and the continued recognition and advancement of Métis rights.
By strengthening relationships and renewing historic ties, the Otipemisiwak Métis Government remains committed to building a stronger and more united future for the Métis Nation and the generations that will follow.
