President's Corner: January 23, 2026
Posted on: Jan 23, 2026
This week, I want to take a moment to acknowledge something many of us are feeling, even if we are carrying it quietly.
Our Nation has experienced loss. We have said goodbye to Elders who carried knowledge, language, and lived history. We have also lost a respected leader who stepped forward to serve our people. Each loss is felt deeply not only by families and friends, but across our communities. In these moments I am reminded how connected we are, and how much each person contributes to the strength of our Nation.
Grief does not follow a straight path. It can show up as sadness, exhaustion, anger, or silence. I want to remind you that you do not have to carry that weight alone. If you are struggling, supports are available to you. Our Government continues to share resources for mental health, crisis response, and community-based supports, including 24/7 crisis lines, Indigenous-specific wellness services, and Métis-led supports. These resources are there for moments of immediate crisis, but also for times when you simply need someone to talk to or help finding your footing again.
Reaching out for support is not a sign of weakness. It is an act of care for yourself and for your community.
In times like these, coming together matters. Gathering, sharing stories, checking in on one another, and making space for both grief and healing is how we honour those we have lost. It is how we carry their teachings and their service forward.
Our Elders have always taught us that strength comes from community. Even in loss, that teaching remains true.
Please take care of yourselves, and please take care of one another.
Maarsi,
Andrea Sandmaier
President Otipemisiwak Métis Government
