President's Statement: Otipemisiwak Métis Government Cautiously Welcomes New Canada/Alberta MOU and Calls for Full Métis Participation
Posted on: Dec 11, 2025
The Otipemisiwak Métis Government cautiously welcomes the formal signing of the Canada-Alberta Memorandum of Understanding regarding the proposed pipeline to the West Coast.
I have always said that there is strength in unity, and this agreement marks an important step toward long-term economic opportunities for Canada, Alberta, the Otipemisiwak Métis Government, and our Citizens.
However, for the MOU to deliver on its promise, Indigenous Peoples must be full partners in the work ahead and our rights must be respected, protected and accommodated. Within Alberta, this means that the Otipemisiwak Métis Government needs to be at the table.
The inclusion of Indigenous consultation and equity participation in this agreement must be regarded as a clear affirmation of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s constitutionally protected Section 35 rights, a recognition of our historic and contemporary role as nation builders in this great province, and a commitment to economic reconciliation with Métis.
We are ready to work collaboratively with Canada and Alberta, ensuring all next steps uphold our self-government agreements, reinforce our rights, and support our shared path toward reconciliation, economic prosperity and nation building for future generations.
Andrea Sandmaier President,
Otipemisiwak Métis Government
