President's Corner: November 28, 2025
Posted on: Nov 28, 2025
As we reach the end of November, I want to take a moment to reflect on the important month we’ve had as a government as and as a people.
This year’s Métis Week was our largest and most attended ever, with Citizens joining events across Alberta to honour our history and celebrate who we are. From flag raisings, the Louis Riel Commemorative Ceremony, and the annual Louis Riel Walk, to the City of Edmonton Proclamation, community gatherings, and the Delia Gray Gala, everywhere I went, I felt an overwhelming sense of unity and connection to our history.
It meant so much to meet so many proud Métis Citizens throughout the week. Thank you to everyone who showed up, volunteered, performed, and supported the events. Your pride, voices, and families are what make these celebrations so meaningful.
This month also brought many moments of reflection. On Indigenous Veterans Day and Remembrance Day, we honoured Métis veterans and all those who have served and sacrificed. Their courage shaped the freedoms we hold today, and we remember their contributions.
Across our Districts, November was filled with ceremonies, dances, community events, and opportunities to share stories, teachings, and culture. These gatherings are another reminder for all of us of the strength we carry from our ancestors and the responsibility we share to build a future grounded in respect, self-determination, and care for one another.
Our government continues its work to advance the priorities of Citizens and strengthen our Nation-to-Nation relationships. This includes ongoing dialogue with Alberta and Canada focused on ensuring Métis voices are heard, respected, and included in decisions that impact our people.
Earlier this week, Alberta and Canada signed a Memorandum of Understanding regarding a proposed pipeline to the West Coast.
Indigenous consultation and equity participation are specifically included in this agreement. This inclusion must be regarded as a clear affirmation of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s constitutionally protected Section 35 rights, a recognition of our historic and contemporary role as nation builders in this great province, and a commitment to economic reconciliation with Métis. As I told Prime Minister Carney back in August at the Canada-Métis Summit, the Métis have always been a partner in building this country and we must be involved as government-to-government partners in building it back up again.
Meaningful participation from the Otipemisiwak Métis Government is not optional. It is essential. As the Métis Nation Within Alberta, Canada and Alberta must work with us to ensure that Métis rights are respected, the Crown’s commitments to our Citizens and government are honoured, and that our partnership remains a foundation for shared prosperity for all Albertans and Métis Citizens alike.
As we move into December and the final weeks of 2025, please keep an eye out for community events and holiday gatherings happening across the province. There will be celebrations, family activities, and opportunities for Citizens to connect before the end of the year. I hope to see many of you there.
