Posted on: Nov 14, 2025
Edmonton — The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is proud to announce the swearing-in of three new District Captains: Mike Hanly, District Captain for the Lac Ste. Anne Métis District; Kelly Myers, District Captain for the Fort McMurray Métis District; and Brenda Genaille, District Captain for the Slave Lake Métis District.
These appointments mark a historic milestone as they are the first-ever District Captains for each of these Métis districts. With their addition, 15 of 22 districts across Alberta have now transitioned to our new governance structure under the Otipemisiwak Métis Government Constitution, representing a significant step forward in advancing Métis self-determination and community-based governance.
“On behalf of our government, I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Mike Hanly, Kelly Myers, and Brenda Genaille,” said Andrea Sandmaier, President of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government. “Each of them brings deep roots, leadership, and a strong commitment to serving their Citizens. Their election marks another proud moment in our shared journey toward fully implementing our Métis government, led by and for our people. I wish them all the best as they begin this important work for their communities.”
As District Captains, Hanly, Myers, and Genaille will lead the District Council governance in their districts representing Métis Citizens and advancing local priorities under the Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s Constitution.

Mike Hanly
Originally born in Calgary, Mike Hanly settled in Devon with his wife, Tracey, where they raised their two children, Matthew and Ashley. Mike has taken great pride in his Métis heritage since he was young, spending time with his father at the Native Friendship Centre in Calgary, harvesting, and learning out on the land. That same pride continues today as he shares Métis history, traditions, and values with his own children.
Believing deeply in the importance of community service, Mike has had the privilege of serving with the Devon Fire Department, the Devon Legion, and on Devon Town Council. As District Captain, his priorities are to build strong partnerships with groups that share common goals and to foster a united Lac Ste. Anne District—one rooted in culture, collaboration, transparency, and advocacy. He is honoured to serve the Citizens of the Lac Ste. Anne Métis District and remains committed to preserving Métis culture for generations to come.
Kelly Myers
Kelly Myers is a proud Métis woman, lifelong resident of Fort McMurray, and dedicated leader whose family has called the area home for six generations. With more than 35 years of experience in Environment, Health, and Safety in the oil sands industry, Kelly has held leadership roles with Petro-Canada, Suncor, and Syncrude, earning respect for her integrity and professionalism.
Since 2017, she has served on the McMurray Métis Local Council, becoming Vice President in 2021 and helping lead the vision and realization of the McMurray Métis Cultural Centre — a lasting home for Métis culture, history, and community. Kelly has also championed Métis education through the Bursary Committee and the Infinity Métis Golf Tournament, supporting countless Métis students.
As District Captain, Kelly is committed to good governance, accountability, and the protection of Métis culture, land, and identity. Her leadership is rooted in gratitude, vision, and love for her community. Her purpose remains clear: honour the past, empower the present, and create opportunities for the future.
Brenda Genaille
Brenda Genaille comes from a large and loving Métis family, the second youngest of eleven siblings. Her roots trace to Ste. Madeleine through her mother and Shortdale, Manitoba through her father. Her father was a skilled hunter, trapper, and carpenter, while her mother was a devoted homemaker and strong advocate for the Michif language. Together, they instilled in their children pride in their Métis identity, a love of culture, and a deep sense of community.
Brenda is a proud mother of three children—one daughter and two sons—and a Kokum to three grandsons who inspire her to carry forward Métis traditions. She values time with family, being out on the land, and learning from Elders who keep Métis stories and knowledge alive.
As District Captain for the Slave Lake Métis District, Brenda is dedicated to housing, economic development, education, language revitalization, and cultural programs that strengthen community wellbeing and connection.
