Statement from President Andrea Sandmaier on the 20th Anniversary of Métis Crossing

Posted on: Sep 25, 2025

It is a true joy to celebrate 20 years since Métis Crossing first opened its gate to the public on our Centennial Opening in 2005 after the Métis Nation of Alberta first acquired the land on which Métis Crossing proudly stands in 2001. From its roots on historic river lots to the thriving cultural destination we see today, Métis Crossing has always been about connection to our land, to our culture, and to one another.

Over the past two decades, Métis Crossing has become one of Alberta’s premier Indigenous tourism destinations. Visitors can experience Métis cultural programming, hands-on workshops, and year-round activities. It is a place of healing, learning, and inspiration.

I want to thank all those who have poured their hearts into building Métis Crossing: our Elders, Knowledge Keepers, Citizens, partners, the Métis Crossing Board, and the dedicated team led by Chief Executive Officer, Juanita Marois. I also wish to acknowledge the vision and leadership of past President Audrey Poitras, without whom this milestone would not be possible.

On behalf of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to everyone who has contributed to this incredible journey. Today we honour the accomplishments of the past 20 years, and we look forward with pride and confidence to the next 20 years and beyond.
