BACKGROUND
The Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s Justice Department was established in August 2023, following a 2021 resolution that reaffirmed a strong commitment to Métis-led, culturally safe, and trauma-informed support for Métis people involved in the justice system. Although we are still in the early stages of development, the department is working toward delivering a culturally relevant justice program grounded in the values and beliefs of Métis Albertans. Our department aims to ensure fair treatment, promote awareness of legal rights, and provide meaningful support to Métis individuals as they navigate the complexities of the criminal, family, and youth court systems.
