FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MÉTIS CROSSING, SMOKY LAKE, Alta. – Aug. 21, 2025 – This week, the Otipemisiwak Métis Government is welcoming Citizens from across Alberta to its 2nd annual Citizens’ Gathering, conducted under our new Constitution, which is taking place from August 21 to 24, 2025, at Métis Crossing.
The event marks 97 years of gathering — nearly a century of the Métis Nation within Alberta coming together to grow, celebrate, and unite as a Nation. The theme for 2025, Healing our Past, Celebrating our Future, acknowledges the efforts of Métis people in building a brighter future for the Nation.
“The Citizens’ Gathering is not only a time to reflect on the past, but to look ahead with hope and strength,” said Andrea Sandmaier, President of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government. “Together, we celebrate our culture, honour our ancestors, and shape a shared vision for the future of our Nation.”
Highlights of the 2025 Citizens’ Gathering include:
- Plenary sessions where Citizens will receive updates on government priorities, finances, and programs.
- Cultural programming showcasing Métis music, dance, art, and traditional skills.
- Youth and family activities designed to inspire the next generation and strengthen intergenerational connections.
- Workshops and engagement sessions for Citizens to contribute ideas, raise concerns, and help shape the direction of the Métis Nation within Alberta.
- Livestream access starting on Friday, August 22 at 9 a.m. MT, available on the Otipemisiwak Métis Government YouTube channel.
The Gathering is expected to draw hundreds of Citizens and guests from across Alberta, making it one of the largest annual Métis events in the province.
