As part of the implementation of the Alberta Métis Cancer Strategy, we have developed a comprehensive cancer screening guide to improve access to information about the cancer screening programs in Alberta. The guide includes information about:

  • Breast cancer screening (mammogram)
  • Cervical cancer screening (Pap smear test)
  • Colorectal cancer screening (fecal immunochemical test [FIT] and a colonoscopy)

You will find information about the cancer screening guidelines, procedures, what to expect during a screening appointment, how to access cancer screening, and tips for cancer prevention.

This guide was informed by our Nishtohtamihk li kaansyr (Understanding Cancer): Cancer Screening, Outcomes, and Experiences among Métis People in Alberta survey, as well as cancer screening gatherings and telephone interviews conducted in 2024. We thank all Métis Albertans who participated in our cancer screening research; this resource would not have been possible without their insights and perspectives.

We also thank our partners at the University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services Screening Programs for their support with this project.

This project was funded by the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer.
