Statement from President Andrea Sandmaier on National Indigenous Peoples Day
Posted on: Jun 20, 2025
On behalf of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government, I want to wish all Métis, First Nations, and Inuit Peoples a joyful and meaningful National Indigenous Peoples Day.
This day is a powerful reminder of who we are. Our languages, our cultures, our stories, and our roots we have across this land carry this reminder. They also inspire us to honour the strength and spirit of Indigenous Peoples that have kept knowledge and tradition alive for generations.
We must remember everything we’ve carried ourselves through, from the pain of residential schools, the Sixties Scoop, and the ongoing legacy of colonialism.
Despite the ongoing impact of colonialism, we are here. We are proud. We are resilient and we are moving forward.
Our Métis Citizens in Alberta come from communities that have helped shape this province for generations. From the buffalo hunt of the plains to the jigging and fiddle music that fill our celebrations today, we have endured.
Today we can also celebrate the future we are building together.
As the President of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government, I am committed to advancing our path of self-government, protecting our rights, and supporting the health, wellbeing, and success of every Métis Citizen.
Whether you’re spending time with family, dancing at a community celebration, or reflecting quietly on this day, please know that you are part of something powerful.
Marsii, and happy National Indigenous Peoples Day.
