President Sandmaier Announces Cabinet Shuffle

Posted on: Jun 05, 2025

President Andrea Sandmaier announced a significant Cabinet overhaul for the Otipemisiwak Métis Government. This restructuring follows recent changes to both the provincial and federal government Cabinets, and her meetings last week in Ottawa with senior federal officials to discuss shifting priorities under the newly elected Government of Canada.

The new Cabinet, appointed by the President in accordance with the Otipemisiwak Métis Government Constitution, now includes 14 Provincial Secretaries, each with a defined portfolio. Notable changes include the creation of a two new dedicated portfolios and revisions to many existing portfolios. Four new members will join Cabinet, which features representation from all five Métis Territories in Alberta, as well as both urban and rural Districts.

Following the announcement to Cabinet members, President Sandmaier is set to reaffirm these priorities at the upcoming Cabinet meeting in Edmonton on June 11. The changes reflect the Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s response to shifting federal and provincial political landscapes, underscoring its commitment to advancing a modern-day Self-Government Treaty and related legislation. President Sandmaier will also emphasize that the new Cabinet will be tasked with delivering on a growing need to focus on regulatory development as prescribed in Otipemisiwak Métis Government law, to continue to breathe life into the new governance structures.

“The Otipemisiwak Métis Government has a strong mandate to engage with the Crown and deliver on the promises of recognized Self-Government both through Treaty and in legislation. Our Cabinet is an integral part of that process and will work with all levels of government to advance the interests of Métis Citizens in Alberta,” said President Sandmaier. “At the same time, we have important governance work to do here at home. I am confident that this newly formed Cabinet will approach its collective and individual mandates with a renewed level of urgency and determination, which should be matched by our governing partners.”

Ten of the 14 Cabinet portfolios were revised, with two new stand-alone portfolios created: the Secretary of Economic and Rural Development and Secretary of Justice. These changes, along with the appointment of four new Citizens Representatives, including two youth, position Cabinet to effectively address the priorities communicated to President Sandmaier by Métis Citizens across the province.

The newly structured Cabinet of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government is as follows:
