Otipemisiwak Métis Government Launches $9.24 Million Energy Efficiency Retrofits Program for Métis Homeowners in Alberta
Edmonton, AB (May 26, 2025) — The Otipemisiwak Métis Government and the Métis Capital Housing Corporation (MCHC) are proud to announce the launch of the Energy Efficiency Retrofits Program (EERP) for Métis homeowners in Alberta, set to officially begin on June 2, 2025. In collaboration with the Environment and Climate Change Department (ECC), this initiative is supported by $9.24 million in funding from Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Low Carbon Economy Fund—Indigenous Leadership Fund (LCEF ILF).
The program will empower Métis Citizens with the tools and resources to improve the energy efficiency of their homes while promoting long-term environmental and economic sustainability.
“This program represents a meaningful step forward in our government’s commitment to creating sustainable housing solutions that meet the unique needs of our Citizens,” said Andrea Sandmaier, President of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government. “By helping our Citizens reduce energy costs and improve home comfort, we are not only addressing affordability but also climate responsibility in a good way.”
The Energy Efficiency Retrofits Program will offer up to $20,000 per household to eligible Métis homeowners for upgrades based on EnerGuide home evaluations. The program will fully subsidize both the pre- and post-retrofit assessments if the applicants choose MCHC’s preferred EnerGuide audit partner. In its first year, the EERP will pilot 50 homes, with a planned expansion to 100 homes in the following year based on evaluation outcomes.
“This initiative is about more than upgrading homes. It’s about restoring pride, empowering families, and protecting our shared environment,” said Valerie Quintal, Secretary of Housing and Infrastructure. “Through partnerships and innovation, we are ensuring Métis Citizens can access the supports they need to live in healthier, more energy-efficient homes.”
To support transparency and engagement, Métis Capital Housing Corporation is hosting a series of online information sessions. Details, eligibility criteria, and application forms will be available at www.metishousing.ca/programs on launch day.
