The Otipemisiwak Métis Government joins people around the world in mourning the passing of Pope Francis.
Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis embodied the principles of humility, compassion, and respect. He was widely recognized for his efforts to bring people together across cultures, faiths, and nations.
His historic 2022 visit to Canada included a pilgrimage to Lac Ste. Anne, a site of great importance to the Métis community. During that visit, he also delivered a formal apology on behalf of the Catholic Church for its role in the horrors of the residential school system. This apology was a significant moment for many survivors and marked an important step on the ongoing path toward truth and reconciliation.
As the College of Cardinals travels to Rome to select the next pope, the Otipemisiwak Métis Government urges them to choose a leader who will carry forward Pope Francis’ legacy and continue the Church’s work in advancing reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples in Canada.
