Bill 2024 – 02 aims to apply protections from inducement, intimidation, and interference for prospective nominees, nominees, and candidates
Edmonton, AB – January 30, 2025 – Citizens’ Council is excited to announce the passing of the first Otipemisiwak Métis Government legislative bill of 2025. At the January 29 Citizens’ Council meeting, Bill 2024-02 An Act to amend the Elections and Referenda Act passed second and third reading with unanimous consent. The purpose of the bill is to increase protection from inducement, intimidation, and interference for prospective nominees, nominees, and candidates.
The bill was first introduced by Secretary of Records, Shannon Dunfield at the December 18, 2024, meeting of Citizens’ Council. As per our laws, Citizens were notified and offered the opportunity to engage and offer their feedback on the draft legislation. The vast majority of respondents felt that protections against bullying, intimidation, and bribery of candidates and nominees within our democratic processes are important, and that Bill 2024-02 meaningfully addressed the issue.
