Press Release: Albertans Commemorate Louis Riel, Celebrate Métis Week

Métis Nation of Alberta President (MNA) Audrey Poitras declared November 13th – 19th, 2016 “Métis Week” in Alberta. In its sixth year, Métis Week is an annual celebration that shares the joy of Métis culture with Albertans. The week is structured around the Louis Riel Commemorative Ceremony on November 16th. On this day, the Alberta Legislature opens its doors so that Métis people can gather to remember Louis Riel and his grave sacrifice in his fight for Métis Rights.
“We are happy to share our proud legacy with the support of the Provincial Government,” stated MNA President Audrey Poitras. “Each year we assemble to celebrate our vibrant culture and remember the important work of our great Métis ancestors including the heroic Louis Riel. Today we stand united on the shoulders of giants.”
Minister of Indigenous Relations Richard Feehan commented that “Métis people have such a significant history in these lands. During Métis Week, I encourage all Albertans to take time to explore and celebrate this dynamic tradition, which continues to shape Alberta and make it stronger.”
